Food Friday: Gingerbread Men

Little Sam gathers ingredients for the batter.
He follows the recipe to the letter,
Making sure the clothes do not tatter;
And gleaming eyes with a curvy smile that is better.
For the last batch didn't taste quite right.
He tosses them into the oven that is very hot.
He watches his masterpieces by turning on the oven light.
Bubbling goo and fire is caught.
Sam swings the door open to rescue his men.
Despite being singed, they are perfect.
He thinks about what could have been,
But his new duty is to protect.
He shows off his skills,
Promising he was the sole cook.
Ooing and awwing at the frills,
Sam's friends take a look.
During class, a student takes a bite.
Sam doesn't even see.
Gingerbread men's joy turn to fright,
As the poor soldier has lost his leg below the knee.
Fright turns to anger as their eyes turn red hot quick.
They go after the students who will eat them next.
They run to their shins and give a swift kick.
Clearly they are vexed.
Sam is unnerved that events have turned.
His perfect batch is staging a coup.
Perhaps they should have never been burned.
But what else was he supposed to do?
"Everyone, save yourselves and eat!"
Even though this meant that his perfect batch is destroyed.
Sadness...Sam didn't know his men had a kick, but they were sweet.
Annoyed, he must now make more to fill his creative and tasty void.
