Imagine you're reading a book
And then you held the binding and shook.
Sheets of paper fall to the ground,
Almost like they were never around.
Put the book into a time capsule and wait a hundred years.
Your great grandkids read the story that appears.
They search for the missing pages,
Knowing that they may be gone for ages;
Or they may be gone forever.
But giving up on the full story; they do never.
This is kind of what fossil finding is like.
Except no one put them there for you to find on a hike.
Animals or plants ceased to be
And sediment covered and hardened over them as we can see.
Paleontologists study fossil records,
Which there are now hoards.
There are still missing links,
Even though, everyday, the chance of finding them shrinks.
Remember, if you find a fossil,
Tell a scientist and do not jostle.
