Be Safe

Please be extra safe tonight.
Please don't drink and drive, or fight.
     Celebrate the year.
     A new one is here.
Enjoy the firework light.

Celebrate

The end is nearly here,
But we should have no fear.
     Celebrate great times.
     Hear the midnight chimes.
Have a Happy New Year!

Unsweet Heat

Shopping is almost complete.
The new year, we shall soon meet.
     Where is the white snow
     If the temp. is low?
Then there is the unsweet heat.

Outer Space

We explore in outer space,
Unsure of what we may face.
     We fly to the stars,
     Find water on Mars.
To the frontier, we shall race.

Tale of the Missing Shoe

He lost a new shoe.
Before there were two.
It was silver and blue.
We retrace our trail.
The path has gone stale.
We will not fail.
We don't have a clue.
Under our nose's view,
There is the shoe.
We let out a relief exhale,
Though the shoes were on sale.
"Yippee, hurray," we hail!

Restless Boy

There once was a boy who wouldn't go to sleep.
There was no addition of soft woolly sheep.
     He crawls and rolls around,
     Making a giggly sound.
His drained mommy sighs and desires to weep.

Christmas

Christmas is a day of gift-giving;
A day of familial fight forgiving.
The morning becomes a land of toys.
Joy and laughter come from girls and boys.
Wrapping paper and shiny bows fly.
Opening cards and lace, they untie.
Parents enjoy cleaning up the mess.
Little ones take a break from academic progress.
Most eat a Turkey for dinner or lunch.
Not us! We go to a Chinese buffet to munch.

Bounce Counts

How many bounces can one bounce an hour?
More than enough to make my mood grow sour.
     Bounce, bounce, bounce.
     My heart counts.
The ball bounces constantly as they tower.

December Heat

December heat
Is not very neat.
We wear shorts
And play sports.
Outside we walk.
In the sun we talk.
Cold drinks needed.
Warm sweat beaded.
We need a nap.
We sleep in a snap.
The globe is warming.
Storms are swarming.
Winter is hot.
Cold, it is not.

Science Saturday: Horrifying Hurricanes

Tropical cyclones are rain makers.
Terrible typhoons are home breakers.
     They wash away
     And ruin the day.
Horrible hurricanes are life takers.

Cyclones run counterclockwise
They cause gigantic demise.
     They swell in the sea,
Grow as big as can be.
Evacuation would be wise.

When circumstances are right,
A superstorm joins the fight.
    Don't be a hero.
    You may be a zero.
If it's too late, bunker tight.

Prepare yourself before May.
Cyclone season won't delay.
     Buy canned food, candles,
     Water, and sandals.
Plan for an extended stay.

Happy Winter Solstice!

The shortest day of the year,
Is finally and happily here.
The Earth's tilt is the reason
Why we have the winter season.
It actually does feel cold,
Wow, I have grown old.
My little one does not know,
What the fuss is about snow.
Hopefully soon he can touch
The stuff of which we don't get much.
I have made chicken noodle soup.
We tell stories as a family group.
We watch movies and play.
We bake cookies and cook tamales all day.
Flowers will bloom after they wilt.
To a celebration of winterly tilt!

The End

There once was a world named Earth,
That was filled with joy and worth.
     Humans had a fit,
     Then destroyed it.
Now there's no more cheer and mirth.

Rogue Meteor

A rogue meteor heads to Earth.
It has tremendous girth.
Scientists alert about their find.
People pray the impact will be kind.
The end of the world may be near,
Fueling the fire of flaming fear.
Raids for supplies quickly take place.
In bomb shelters, some hide and pace.
As paranoia exponentially fans,
There are meteor destruction plans
Scientists do the math
To drive it off its path.
Maybe there will be a spacewalk
To blow up the giant rock.
The world's ills don't seem to matter.
People become madder and sadder
At the hopelessness they feel now.
This can't be the end; no way, no how.
They all take a deep breath and hold.
The air grows still and cold.

Tales Tuesday: Zombie Apocalypse

Scientists study cancer,
Testing a brain enhancer.
But the vaccine is not right.
It bites back with a fight.
The cannibal virus eats
On human brain meats.
Changing the infected
Who are injected.
They become undead
And hungrily charge ahead.

Day by day, city by city,
People turn. What a pity.
Citizens are alarmed
And many are armed.
Due to the impending doom.
Squeezing in a safe room
The alive ration meals,
But someone steals.
The food runs out
And they all shout.

The zombies are near.
The group shows fear.
They turn most,
With their viral host.
Little Eric shoves a Twinkie
Into a sling shot slinky.
He shoots and zombies snack,
Not knowing what the snacks lack.
Zombies chew.
Zombies moo.

A zombie chokes.
So little Eric pokes,
To make sure it doesn't move.
They can be beat, he seems to prove.
Eric saves the day.
He continues to play,
With his action figurines.
Reading comic magazines,
He has such an imagination,
Successfully ending the zombie infestation.

Math Monday: Happening Hypotheses

A hypothesis is an educated guess.
It needs testing and nothing less.
Hypotheses are the part with "if."
Conclusions have "then," which can be tested in a jiff.
If the banana is yellow, then it is ready to eat.
If a runner is tired, then they may want a seat.
If leaves turn orange, then it is fall.
If parents are giants, then the child will grow tall.
If I pet a kitty, then they will purr.
If I jump on the sleeping Daddy, then he will stir.
If "x" is a negative number, then it can't be zero or above.
If Mommy hugs me, then she is showing her love.
Don't forget to test these.
Be responsible when you make hypotheses.

Green Stocking

We added one stocking this year.
The birth of our son, we cheer.
Traditions, we usually don't follow,
But stockings aren't left hollow.
We give favorite candy
And items that are handy.
Little things, we like to share.
Sharing things shows we care.
We have red, blue, and now green.
Until it's time, gifts are unseen.
This tradition our son can take delight.
May he find fun toys and tasty foods to bite.

Shingle Swells

I was hoping to write about inertia today for Science Saturday, but since I am not feeling well, this is all I have.

Shingle swells, shingle swells,
Shingles on my face.
Oh what fun are these hives.
I'd rather be sprayed with mace.

Food Friday: Ice Cream Ids

Yes please, I think I will have some ice cream.
With the humidity and the heat, it's hotter than it may seem.
Spoonfuls of creamy coldness
Is wintry boldness.
Perhaps a waffle cone may do.
My teeth chatter when I chew.
White chocolate raspberry swirl
For a day that has been a whirl.
The treat makes everything bittersweet,
As I sit here eating in my seat;
Thinking about today's events.
The whole world laments
The needless killing of kids.
Finding my lid, I think there are too many unnoticed damaged ids.

Sickness Fatigue

My baby and I trade being ill.
Surely, we have met our fill.
Our days go up and down.
We frequently frown
At what may possibly be wrong.
To calm us, I sing a little song.
I've never been this sick.
Hospital visits have been hectic.
It makes me sad
That both of us feel bad.
I don't want to be a constant fretter.
Hopefully, soon we will get better.

Stop The Bullies

bully
Bullies are mean.
Bullies are green.
Bullies attack.
Bullies talk smack.
They don't fit a mold.
They don't do what they're told.
Bullies blackmail.
Bullies are male and female.
Bullies follow.
Bullies are hollow.
They cheat and lie.
They make you want to cry.
Bullies control.
Bullies patrol.
Bullies steal.
Bullies tell you not to squeal.
You don't need to take it.
Tell an adult to make bullies quit.

Tales Tuesday: Good Morning, Mommy!

I wake up in the morning and it is bright.
The sun is up, providing red, pink, and orange light.
The birds are happy as they tweet and sing.
A new day is here. I wonder what fun it will bring.
I turn to Mommy as she is still asleep.
I stare at her and smile, while not making a peep.
Though, the time for being up is coming near.
I quietly speak just loud enough for her to hear.
She tiredly says "Son, go back to sleep. It's early."
We've been asleep all night. She must be joking, surely.
I double my efforts to be an alarm clock.
I roll over, climb on mommy, and now loudly talk.
"Get up, Mommy! We must start our day!
I want you to be awake so that we can play!"
I roll and crawl to make an earthquake.
Mommy groans as she stirs awake.
"Okay, okay son. I guess we're up."
I smile at mommy, not knowing what is the holdup.
She smiles back and gives me a kiss on the head.
She picks me up as we get out of bed.
We giggle as we leave the bedroom.
Good morning, Mommy! Let's play with my new riding toy, "vroom!"

Math Monday: Glorious Geometry

I love geometry.
There is symmetry.
There are lines and angles;
Points and triangles;
Octagons and rhombi;
Area and radii;
Geometric wedges
And edges.
Neat looking trapezoids.
Finding answers to voids.
Beautiful center of gravity;
Filled to capacity.
A 3D side is called a face.
2D shapes have space.
Hierarchical family trees.
One hundred eighty degrees.
There are conjectures
And given figures;
Parallels, circular arcs,
And mathematical marks.
Follow the isometry.
Learn geometry!

Product Review Sunday: Education

Learning new ideas can be fun.
We grow smarter as the Earth revolves around the Sun.
It empowers the mind to ask questions.
Leadership is born when we make suggestions.
Mistakes are prevented when history is read.
Innovation is conquered when creativity is spread.
We need math to know how things add up.
We need comedians to know when to sit back and crack up.
Science teaches us how everything works.
Communication is necessary to join networks.
Imagination in relationships can be key.
The arts may be the only way we'll see.
To feed the mind, we must feed the body as an athlete.
It is important for our education to be diverse and complete.

Science Saturday: Gravity's a Downer.

Gravity is the force that holds us to the ground.
If a ball is thrown, the path down is round.
Let go of an apple and watch it fall.
People dive from planes, an activity to enthrall.
To escape gravity, one can use helium to float.
One can't be free from it in the water, so they float on a boat.
Or one can fly in a spaceship that uses thrust.
Impressive propelling rockets are a must.
Gravity is what keeps the air on the Earth.
We owe it to gravity; our life's worth.
For without it, life may simply not exist.
And if gravity disappeared, it would surely be missed.

Procrastination

Saturday's post will be a little late due to a busy schedule.  The topic will be about gravity for those whom are interested.  Thank you for reading!

December is hot.
Parents are always tired.
Sleeping sounds so sweet.

Food Friday: Gingerbread Men

Little Sam gathers ingredients for the batter.
He follows the recipe to the letter,
Making sure the clothes do not tatter;
And gleaming eyes with a curvy smile that is better.
For the last batch didn't taste quite right.
He tosses them into the oven that is very hot.
He watches his masterpieces by turning on the oven light.
Bubbling goo and fire is caught.
Sam swings the door open to rescue his men.
Despite being singed, they are perfect.
He thinks about what could have been,
But his new duty is to protect.
He shows off his skills,
Promising he was the sole cook.
Ooing and awwing at the frills,
Sam's friends take a look.
During class, a student takes a bite.
Sam doesn't even see.
Gingerbread men's joy turn to fright,
As the poor soldier has lost his leg below the knee.
Fright turns to anger as their eyes turn red hot quick.
They go after the students who will eat them next.
They run to their shins and give a swift kick.
Clearly they are vexed.
Sam is unnerved that events have turned.
His perfect batch is staging a coup.
Perhaps they should have never been burned.
But what else was he supposed to do?
"Everyone, save yourselves and eat!"
Even though this meant that his perfect batch is destroyed.
Sadness...Sam didn't know his men had a kick, but they were sweet.
Annoyed, he must now make more to fill his creative and tasty void.

Foggy December

The air is a warm,
Humid swarm
Of choking wet gas.
Eriely entered the rolling mass.
The grass has dew
And the streets do too.
The water is cool
In the swimming pool.
The fog dances
As the air prances.
I take a stroll,
Which takes its toll.
Tricks are played on my eyes.
For clarity, my mind tries.
I can't see
And I can't break free.
My mind is full of a bog.
All I see is the fog.

Thought Experiment Thursday: Man Falls Onto Subway Tracks

A man is pushed onto the subway tracks
After engaging in verbal attacks.
This pain should have never occurred.
But, alas the controversial moral pot has been stirred.
A photographer captures the entire event.
His help was not lent.
Instead, he flashes his camera to prevent fatal pain.
But nothing can stop the subway train.
Should the photographer had run to the fallen man's aid?
Or, does he have a duty to document stories to get paid?
Was he even close enough?
These split second decisions are tough.
And what of the hundreds whom only watched?
Could not one of them rescued this life that was botched?
Surely each person has a moral duty to protect.
Neglect allowed this poor life to be wrecked.

Now We're Getting Places!

Little Tadpole, you started out so small
And now you have grown so tall.
You could barely move.
You had nothing to prove.
But now you thrive
And can do the jive.
You climb to your feet
And kitties you meet.
Briefly, you stand alone.
A wiggly boy, unlike stone.
So giggly as you throw your hands in the air.
Taking bold leaps, more than Mommy thinks you should dare.
You are so carefree,
But you still cling to me.
Just stand flat on your feet and not on your toe.
You're my tiny sprite baby on the go.

Tales Tuesday: Goodnight Kitty

We are winding down for the night.
The kitties bask in the decreasing sunlight.
Bright becomes the superhero night light.
It is story time in the middle of the living room floor.
The kitties jump from their perch and the center of attention, they implore.
The baby boy pats the kitties. They have such a great rapport.
Daddy walks to kitchen and the kitties think it's time to eat.
Whoosh, they are quick on their feet.
Both athletes compete for the first bite of the meaty treat.
Into the bathroom, we all brush our teeth. The baby points out two.
The boy kitty jumps onto the toilet of a blue hue.
He waits until we're done, while perching as a furry, purring statue.
The baby and boy kitty sing a little ditty.
The baby pats both felines, thinking they are pretty.
Before the baby goes to bed, he says "goodnight girl kitty. Goodnight boy kitty."

Math Monday: Fibonacci's Infinite Flowering

Zero, one, one, two, three, five.
Pineapple, sunflower, bee hive.
Eight, thirteen, twenty-one.
Tree limbs maximize under the sun.
Apples and bananas have golden powers.
Fibonacci's spirals are in pretty flowers.
Such mathematic beauty shows up in pinecones.
The golden numbers are even present in human bones.
It's within the chambered nautilus, starfish, and the sweet dolphin.
See it during the carving of a Halloween pumpkin.
Hear the math with the cochlea in the inner ear.
Go explore in nature to see where Fibonacci's sequence may appear.

Science Saturday: Fantastic Fossil Frenzy

http://images.nationalgeographic.com/wpf/media-live/photos/000/012/cache/trilobite-fossil_1262_990x742.jpg
Imagine you're reading a book
And then you held the binding and shook.
Sheets of paper fall to the ground,
Almost like they were never around.
Put the book into a time capsule and wait a hundred years.
Your great grandkids read the story that appears.
They search for the missing pages,
Knowing that they may be gone for ages;
Or they may be gone forever.
But giving up on the full story; they do never.

This is kind of what fossil finding is like.
Except no one put them there for you to find on a hike.
Animals or plants ceased to be
And sediment covered and hardened over them as we can see.
Paleontologists study fossil records,
Which there are now hoards.
There are still missing links,
Even though, everyday, the chance of finding them shrinks.
Remember, if you find a fossil,
Tell a scientist and do not jostle.
